Andreas Grabner

Gründungsmitglied Künstlerkollektiv "Himmel Hoch Fünf".

Seit Jahren tätig als bildender Künstler. Unterricht durch Karl Kreutzberger in jungen Jahren, ehemals  Mitglied der  Wiener Sezession, Art Club. Expressionist.

Biography

Andreas Grabner was born in Vienna/Austria. Family related influence for art and culture characterize his education. Early studies in fine arts by Karl Kreutzberger, expressionist, former member of the “Wiener Sezession, Art Club”. Finaly decision for “Medical School/University of Vienna” and graduation in Vienna 1984. During residency in Vienna also further medical education and scientific work at Mayo Clinic/USA. Intensive contact to Peter Kolin, phantastic realist. Frequent participation of national and international exhibitions. Member of the “Professional Association of Visional Artists in Austria”, member of the “Austrian Medical Association”.
Numerous (educational) travel to Asia, Middle East, Africa and within Europe nourished and ignited sensations, feelings and impressions for thoughts and ideas, that are reflected in the artist’s work. His work has, on the one hand, a clear structured plan, and grants, on the other hand, freedom and openness for current and impulsive emotions. These are processed and show a subconscious horizon. Processing itself becomes part of the art. The visitor stylistically may associate a neo – expressionistic feeling with a touch of tachism. His artwork may as well remember an influence of informal art. The artist uses acrylic, oil, spray and pastel mostly as mixed media on canvas, cardboard, paper or wood panel. The subject changes from originally processed travel impressions, related to culture, religion, philosophy and population, to the artists own thought – provoking opinion. The process of his work leads the visitor to a journey. The pictures are partly abstract and abstracting, but also show figurative and representational motifs. Experimental and spontaneous elements influence his work. Typically for his style is a spontaneous “scribble art” with pastel, acrylic and spray, and, on the other hand, using acrylic, oil and spray in “mixed media”. Participation in national and international exhibitions, as well as conceptual art projects, showing objects, installations and performance. These projects discuss a philosophical work -background, reflecting questions, that are expressed in the artwork itself. “Art is not  a thing, it is a way” (Elbert Hubbard).
The ideas and motifs basically arose from essential experiences of daily life, showing expressive reflections of situations and their resulting reactions. Numerous travelling and interactive, critical, and cultural analysis have an input in his work. Observing leads to philosophical analyzing, and furthermore, step by step, in a way of active correction what the artist finally wants to express, the artwork is finished. Initially, an idea takes shape. A motif wants to be transferred onto canvas, paper or wood panel. The subject matter can be figurative, expressive, or an experienced scene, or pure abstract. Depending on the actual technique sometimes numerous layers lead to the final result. Anger, suspicion, fear, joy, cunning, astonishment or criticism can be found in portrait – associated works, although no specific personality serves as the motif. Rather, it is the momentary expression that is captured. Also with travel and landscape themes, the artist works solely form memory, without any photographic reference. Emotions serve as a basis and starting point for his work. The influence of a philosophical, social and critical background completes his way of painting.
Main interest are faces and abstract art in mixed media on canvas, wood panel or paper. Acrylic color, acrylic paint, oil, spray, pastel and graphic elements are used in various layers after numerous drying phases. Occasionally, this gives the images a three – dimensional structural character. Part of the work also involves an experimental approach. The picture is only finished when the artist, and of course ideally the viewer, can “walk through” it.
A second characteristic of his style is the actionist, tachism working method, which creates harmonious, expressive snapshots. Although we are talking about “snapshots”, the work process requires planning and takes the necessary time. Pastel, spray and pencils are mainly used for the artworks created in this way. The use of diverse mixed media techniques and the fascination of facial expression as one theme, coupled with tachism and a typical “scribble style” make his work unique.
The artist´s work  also interacts with conceptual art, where a central theme is explicitly developed for a presentation. This results in series that illuminate social, geopolitical, existential – philosophical, and psychological aspects. One can also interpret this as an influence of the medical profession, which the artist practiced throughout his life. Perception, interpretation, philosophy, and natural scientific experience, as well as tolerance and humanism, can be found in his oeuvre. Nevertheless, his work displays a specific charisma.
The artist lives and works in his house and studio in Lower Austria. He has participated in numerous national and international exhibitions.
Artworks are represented by “Twenty Six Gallery”, Vienna and featured by Artsy.
